    • when anger arises, put it between brackets. (i think i'm irritated) this helps not fueling the negative feeling
    • practise observing your emotions as you focus on your breathing during meditation and your breathing in every day life will adjust so that it will become in sync with your mind
    • when a person is angry, focus with your senses on the pain that person is going through, helps not to react from your ego
    • think of joy (of recognition) as manifestation of pleasure in response to the pain of wanting recognition
    • the apparent hatred we express while pretending to be someone else (online presence) is an expression of the true self inside us that we keep tucked away in a deep corner of our mind
    • pleasure is something that doesn't exist physically. it is an illusion that we experience when our pain decreases and the brain misinterprets the elimination of pain as pleasure
    • in buddhism, the best thing to do both for ourselves and for someone who has passed away is not to grieve endlessly, but to have a mind of compassion. praying that they are in a calm state as we meditate for compassion (loving-kindness meditation)
    • Zenyu refers to an irreplaceable friend with whom we can develop our minds in a manner that is mutually beneficial
    • the first thing to do is to say goodbye to the pride that comes from the klesha of arrogance— not wanting to be defeated by others and avoiding showing people the distortions within us
    • receiving information, believing it bo a script and breaking away from that perception, which then turns out to be another part of the script— understanding that constant repetition will be a blow to our sense of self

  • During the civil wars in feudal Japan, an invading army would quickly sweep into a town and take control. In one particular village, everyone fled just before the army arrived - everyone except the Zen master.

    Curious about this old fellow, the general went to the temple to see for himself what kind of man this master was. When he wasn't treated with the deference and submissiveness to which he was accustomed, the general burst into anger. "You fool," he shouted as he reached for his sword, "don't you realize you are standing before a man who could run you through without blinking an eye!"

    But despite the threat, the master seemed unmoved. "And do you realize," the master replied calmly, "that you are standing before a man who can be run through without blinking an eye?"

  • Shih the carpenter was on his way to the state of Chi. When he got to Chu Yuan, he saw an oak tree by the village shrine. The tree was large enough to shade several thousand oxen and was a hundred spans around. It towered above the hilltops with its lowest branches eighty feet from the ground. More than ten of its branches were big enough to be made into boats. There were crowds of people as in a marketplace. The master carpenter did not even turn his head but walked on without stopping.

    His apprentice took a long look then ran after Shih the carpenter and said, "Since I took up my ax and followed you, master, I have never seen timber as beautiful as this. But you do not even bother to look at it and walk on without stopping. Why is this?

    Shih the carpenter replied, "Stop! Say no more! That tree is useless. A boat made from it would sink, a coffin would soon rot, a tool would split, a door would ooze sap, and a beam would have termites. It is worthless timber and is of no use. That is why it has reached such a ripe old age."

    After Shih the carpenter had returned home, the sacred oak appeared to him in a dream, saying, "What are you comparing me with? Are you comparing me with useful trees? There are cherry, apple, pear, orange, citron, pomelo, and other fruit trees. As soon as the fruit is ripe, the trees are stripped and abused. Their large branches are split, and the smaller ones torn off. Their life is bitter because of their usefulness. That is why they do not live out their natural lives but are cut off in their prime. They attract the attentions of the common world. This is so for all things. As for me, I have been trying for a long time to be useless. I was almost destroyed several times. Finally I am useless, and this is very useful to me."
